A pool deck has to do two things at once: stay level enough to walk on barefoot and slope enough that a summer storm leaves it in minutes, away from both the pool and the house. Under a screen enclosure, with the water table near the coast and the river only a couple of feet down, the water that runs off the deck needs a planned way out — or it stands at the edge, softens the base and the pavers beside it start to sink.

We build and rebuild pool decks in concrete pavers or travertine at $12 to $25 per square foot installed, the same range as our driveways and patios. Where the deck holds water at one edge, a slot or channel drain goes in at the low point, tied to solid pipe that carries the water to the street, a swale or the pond easement — $500 to $1,500 per drain. Existing decks are cleaned, re-sanded and sealed at $1.25 to $3.50 per square foot.

How we build pool decks

  1. Find the low edgeWe check where water stands after a storm and where the deck's water can legally go.
  2. Lift and rebuildSunken sections come up, the base is rebuilt and compacted, and the slope away from pool and house is reset.
  3. Drain at the low pointA slot or channel drain set into the deck, piped away from the pool.
  4. Relay, sand and sealPavers or travertine relaid, joints filled with polymeric sand, sealed once cured.

Paver Pool Decks FAQ

What is the best paver for a pool deck?

Travertine and concrete pavers both work. Travertine has a softer, natural look; concrete pavers come in more colors and are easy to match to a driveway. Both fall in our $12 to $25 per square foot installed range.

Why are the pavers around my pool sinking?

Water standing at the edge of the deck washes the bedding out and softens the base, so the pavers beside it drop. We relay the section and give the water a way out, usually a slot or channel drain.

Can you put pavers over a concrete pool deck?

Sometimes. It depends on the condition of the slab and the height an overlay leaves at the doors, the coping and the screen enclosure. We look at it on the inspection and tell you which way to go.

Do pool decks need a channel drain?

Not every one. A deck that sheds water off its outer edge onto lawn that slopes away is fine. A deck enclosed by a screen wall, or one that slopes toward the house, needs a drain at the low edge.

How much does it cost to put pavers on a pool deck?

$12 to $25 per square foot installed, plus $500 to $1,500 per drain where one is needed. We measure on the inspection and write the price down before work starts.
