Paver patios that shed the rain
Back patios, lanai extensions, walks and fire-pit areas in concrete pavers or travertine — sloped away from the house, with the drainage designed in.

A paver patio in Jacksonville gets hit by the same afternoon storms as the roof, usually right where the downspouts empty. Built flat, or sloped back toward the house, it turns into a shallow pond against the slab and the sliding door. Built on a compacted base with a slope away from the house and a route for the water at its low edge, it sheds a storm in minutes.
Our patios are concrete pavers from Belgard or Tremron, or travertine, matched to the house and to what is already on the lot. They run $12 to $25 per square foot installed; a typical patio comes to $4,000 to $10,000, and a 20 by 20 foot patio — 400 square feet — works out to about $4,800 to $10,000 before anything unusual under the ground. If a downspout empties onto the patio, we pipe it underground before the pavers go down, at $300 to $800 per point.
How we build patios
- Plan the water firstWhere the downspouts empty and which way the yard falls decide the slope and any drain before the layout is drawn.
- Dig out and compactSod and soft soil come out, and the base is compacted in layers with the fall set away from the house.
- Edges and paversEdge restraint holds the field; pavers or travertine are laid, cut and compacted.
- Lock the jointsPolymeric sand fills the joints; sealing follows once it has cured.

Paver Patios FAQ
How much should a paver patio cost?
In our area pavers run $12 to $25 per square foot installed, and a typical patio comes to $4,000 to $10,000 depending on its size, the paver and what is under it.
How much does a 20x20 paver patio cost?
400 square feet at $12 to $25 per square foot is about $4,800 to $10,000 before anything unusual under the ground.
Are pavers good for patios?
In Florida, yes: they handle sun and storms, a settled section can be lifted and relaid, and they can be sloped and drained precisely. The joints need polymeric sand and periodic sealing to stay weed-free.
Do you need a permit for patio pavers?
A patio on your own lot usually does not involve the city. The permit we deal with most is for work in the right-of-way at the street. We tell you on the inspection whether anything on your job needs one.
How do you level sunken patio pavers?
Lift the low section, add and compact base material, relay and re-sand. If water standing there caused the sinking, the water gets fixed too.
