A paver driveway in Northeast Florida is a drainage job with a good-looking surface on top. It carries cars every day and takes a 2 to 4 inch storm several times a summer, on sand over a hardpan that will not soak that water up. What decides whether it lasts is under the pavers and at the edges: the compacted base, the edge restraint that keeps the field from creeping, and a slope that sends water to the street instead of the garage.
We build driveways in Belgard and Tremron concrete pavers rated for vehicles. A typical 600 to 1,000 square foot driveway runs $8,000 to $20,000 installed — $12 to $25 per square foot — and where water runs down the driveway toward the house, a channel drain across the apron is set into the pavers as they are laid, at $500 to $1,500. The apron at the street sits in the city right-of-way and needs a City of Jacksonville permit inside the city; when it applies, it is part of the written scope.
How we build driveways
- Break out the old drivewayCracked concrete or failed pavers come out, and whatever caused the failure — roots, standing water, a soft base — is dealt with first.
- Build and compact the baseThe base is placed and compacted in layers, with the fall toward the street set before a single paver goes down.
- Edge restraint and drainageRestraint along every edge, and a channel drain across the apron where the driveway carries water to the garage.
- Lay, cut and compactPavers are laid in the pattern you choose, cut at the edges and compacted into the bedding.
- Sand and sealJoints are filled with polymeric sand and, once it cures, the surface can be sealed — then every two to three years.

Sunken apron
The street end drops first. It is lifted, the base topped up and compacted, and the same pavers relaid.
Oil and tire marks
Cleaning and sealing lifts most of them and makes the next spill easier to wash off.
Faded and weedy
Clean, re-sand and seal: $1.25 to $3.50 per square foot, driveways from $899.

Paver Driveways FAQ
Is a paver driveway worth it?
On sandy Northeast Florida ground, often yes: pavers on a compacted base flex instead of cracking, and a section that sinks or is lifted by roots can be relaid rather than replaced. A new paver driveway costs $12 to $25 per square foot installed in our area.
How much does a driveway with pavers cost?
A typical 600 to 1,000 square foot driveway is $8,000 to $20,000, with the base, edge restraint and slope included. A channel drain at the apron adds $500 to $1,500.
What about the paver driveway apron?
The apron is where the driveway meets the street, and inside the City of Jacksonville it sits in the right-of-way, which needs a city permit. It is also where a channel drain does the most good.
Why is my paver driveway sinking?
Usually the base: not compacted enough, sand washed out of the joints, or water standing on that section. Roots push sections up instead. We relay the section and fix the cause.
Can you combine a concrete driveway with pavers?
It can be done — a paver apron or border on a sound concrete driveway. Where the concrete is already cracked, replacing it is usually the better spend; we tell you which on the inspection.
